Don’t Give up Because Life will take you Higher than Drugs!

On December 7, 1987, the United Nations decided to observe 26 June as the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking as an expression of its determination to strengthen action and cooperation to achieve the goal of an international society free of drug abuse. Supported each year by individuals, communities, and various organizations all over the world, this global observance aims to raise awareness of the major problem that illicit drugs represent to society.

Drug Abuse and its addiction is a huge problem society faces today. It has shattered the lives of many, and many weren’t even left with a life. It is a problem which we all know, and there are quite a lot of laws associated with the same, but still, we have found ourselves unable to terminate this practice. “If you can quit for a day, you can quit for a lifetime,” said Benjamin Alire Sáenz, but the present situation conveys a very different message.

Around 269 million people used drugs worldwide in 2018, which is 30 percent more than in 2009, while over 35 million people suffer from drug use disorders, according to the latest World Drug Report, given by United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime.

According to a report by The National Center for Biotechnology Information in India around 74 Million people in India consume drugs, in the form of alcohol, cannabis, opiates, and sedatives.

Another report shows, nearly 75% of Indian households have at least one family member who uses drugs.

A survey conducted by Dechenla Tsering, Ranabir Pal and Aparajita Dasgupta in Delhi showed that out of 416 students, 52 (12.5%) used or abused any one of the substances irrespective of time and frequency in a lifetime; 26 (15.1 %) were among the urban students and 26 (10.7 %) were among their rural counterparts. More than two-thirds (73.07%) of the respondents expressed a desire to quit substance use and (57.69%) had tried to stop.

Now the question arises why do people pursue this path of doom? If you ever talk to an addict you will get a plethora of excuses. These excuses include peer pressure, to escape or relax, To relieve boredom, to seem grown up, to rebel, and to experiment. Some other reasons can be anxiety, lack of confidence, or depression. They think drugs are a solution. But eventually, the drugs become the problem, and once you start it demands a lot of strength and courage to leave this practice. But as Napolean Bonaparte once said- “Courage isn’t having the strength to go on – it is going on when you don’t have strength.”

If you are addicted to any kind of drug then please accept the fact that you are addicted and try to do something about it. There are many NGOs like Stairs organization and Save The Children Organization who are there to help you. You can also take the help of a therapist. Talk to your elders, they may get angry but they will always help you to lead a better life. Ask for help and you will get it. Because as Brittany Burgunder said “Recovery is hard. Regret is harder.”

On this International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, let’s pledge that we would never commit to drug abuse, life will shatter you, it will show you what you could never have imagined, but remember what Steve Maraboli said, “Life doesn’t get easier or more forgiving, we get stronger and more resilient.” Be confident, stay strong because you deserve a life much better than what you expect. Say no to drugs, because you deserve better and stand unharmed because the world isn’t  an easy place to live in, but as Friedrich Nietzsche said: “That which does not kill us makes us stronger.”
