Be Human but more importantly be Humane!

Though we share this planet Earth with millions of other species, we live oblivious to the fact that the Earth is as much theirs as ours. We act as if we are the superior beings of this planet. Its kind of an act of hypocrisy to ask for liberty and democracy while acting with the ideas of a monarch. We may have human brains but its a common observation that we are kind of losing the human emotions that are sympathy and kindness.

“For as long as men massacre animals, they will kill each other. Indeed, he who sows the seed of murder and pain cannot reap joy and love.”  ― Pythagoras

We see how people complain about animals being dangerous to us. Fun fact, a research shows that the second most dangerous animal to humans is human beings themselves! With a brain so advanced comes greed, cupidity, and malice!

“Of all the animals, man is the only one that is cruel. He is the only one that inflicts pain for the pleasure of doing it.”― Mark Twain, “Man’s Place in the Animal World” (1896)

According to PetPedia-

  • Every 60 seconds, one animal suffers abuse.
  • Close to 65% of all abused animals are dogs.
  • Every year, more than 10 million animals die from abuse in the US alone.
  • On average, 250,000 animals every year are victims of animal hoarding.
  • Every year, more than 115 million animals in the world are used for laboratory experiments.
  • Approximately 75,000 dogs are tortured in US labs every year.

“An animal experiment cannot be justifiable unless the experiment is so important that the use of a brain-damaged human would be justifiable.”― Peter Singer

These stats are not only shocking but as well as deplorable. It shows our tendency to hurt other species knowingly or unknowingly.

“Cruel owner throws boiling water at a dog and cuts shapes into the skin with a knife”- Mirror

“Two arrested in Kolkata for killing 16 puppies at hospital premises; multiple inquiries launched after animals found beaten to death”- Firstpost.

These are some of the many headlines this year. These incidents make us ask that we may be Humans but are we humane?

Though many violent people commit these kinds of unjustified crimes, there are still some animal lovers who are raising their voices against this atrocity. People like Maneka Gandhi, Gauri Maulekhi, Gene Baur, James Aspey, Paul Shapiro, and Anuradha Sawhney are some of the famous Animal rights activists, who are working every day to save these animals from ill-treatment. Visakha Society for Protection and Care of Animals (VSPCA India), Sanjay Gandhi Animal Care Centre (SGACC), Stray Relief and Animal Welfare (STRAW) are some of the NGOs working for animal rights.

“Until one has loved an animal, a part of one’s soul remains unawakened.”
― Anatole France

So all we need is a more humane society who treats not just humans but animals with dignity and care, we need people who fight for these animals and the injustice against them. We need better government policies and better implementation of the laws to conserve animals.

“The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated.”
― Mahatma Gandhi
