The whole incident was heartbreaking and outraging. The world is a very diverse place, it is divided, we all are divided based upon our nationality, or gender, or caste, or religion, or even on the basis of the color of our skin! It can be misread that unity cannot exist in such a diverse world, but that isn’t true. “It is time for parents to teach young people early on that in diversity there is beauty and there is strength,” said Maya Angelou. When we all come to know about any inequality, we come together. It is funny that at times inequality brings us together.

Diversity cannot be obliterated, it is something we should be proud of, and it is something we should accept with great delight! We as teenagers are diverse too. Some of us are promising at sports, some are good in studies, some are tall, some are short, and in short, we are divided based on every minor aspect! I’m not saying that anyone is keeping any record of it, but yes naturally we are different from each other, but as Stephen R. Covey said- “Strength lies in differences, not in similarities!”

The problem starts when some people start thinking that they are superior and that others aren’t as good enough as them. There may be a chance that a particular religious group may feel that they are superior to the other religious groups, or maybe a white person may think that he is better than a black man, or maybe the captain of the football team may bully a student who is good in studies just because he feels he isn’t good enough. These are some incidents which are happening every day! Most of the people would again feel that it is the diversity that causes events like these, but these mishappenings aren’t a result of diversity but simply of the human ego!

Anthea Lipsett published a study in the very well recognized daily, “The Guardian”. A UN report showed that all children and adolescents are at risk of school violence and bullying, but bullies target vulnerable factors, such as poverty or social status associated with ethnicity, linguistic or cultural differences, migration or displacement. Incidents happen, hashtags trend, at times justice is served, and then the cycle continues! Why are we letting these incidents happen in the very first place? We who are showing support for George Floyd maybe discriminating against our friend because he comes from some other religious group. I say inequality and discrimination of any sort are bad, and it must not be tolerated. We should move forward as a society, some people feel that they have nothing to do if they aren’t the ones being discriminated against. This is a foolish mentality, Franklin Benjamin said-“Justice will not be served until those who are unaffected are as outraged as those who are.” I say fight against discrimination, don’t wait for the day it knocks your own door!

P.S. – Special thanks to Ms. Sehaj Bhullar for inspiring me to write this.

Do Subscribe the Blog!
