The Productivity Race Ft. COVID-19

As a teenager, we at times feel perplexed about our situations, at times there is a huge margin between what we want and what is expected from us.

Corona virus has posed a global challenge to every human being in this world. Everyday we see parents making their children make videos related to spreading awareness regarding COVID-19, this has become a trend. I see children of different ages getting compared by their parents just because according to them their friends are doing “productive work”. It is a foolish mentality in our country that trends on social media are always correct and need to be followed.

When the order was given out regarding the nationwide lockdown in India, for the first time in many years we had a chance to explore, to just simply live and learn, but what we see is, this lockdown period has turned out into a “productivity race”! Parents scolding their children to study and not waste time. We live in a world where most of our parents are so engrossed in their jobs and offices that they hardly have any time for us. Now they have 24 hours which they can spend just with us, but this idea of spending quality time is seen as a wastage of precious time.

I ask you why in this lockdown period can we not do what we want and love? Before corona we had people dying of heart attacks and suicides, people have so much pressure on them that they just give up! Times like these though are tough but we also get an opportunity to connect with our parents, siblings and finally diminish the social distancing that we have seen since years! Though we have a new threat, the older ones aren’t over yet. Why do children commit suicide? Simple answer is that they are pushed in a race, a race where he is expected to win but not accepted when he looses!

I see every school giving children work related to studies, there are online classes, but there is no mention of learning new things or about reading books. Why is that? In our country, we aren’t supposed to enjoy our lives, but we have to run and keep running till our legs give out and we take our last breaths somewhere on our death bed. At the end of the race, will there be that contentment of winning or will there be a sigh of relief that it is over? I want to ask this why is it a general idea that enjoyment is bad, that it is a waste of time? Why always our major motto is productivity?

Also why is productivity limited to only academic excellence? Why isn’t reading a book, or writing a poem productive? I read everyday on the internet about predictions that the world is going to end soon! I don’t know if that is true, but if it is, I don’t want to end up running in a race which never ends, I would rather die as an unproductive, foolish, but a happy person!

  1. So True man. If this time was actually taken as a break to know ourselves a country like us could produce such great people.
